Brexit Brits - For Brits, Expats And Brexit

Relocating to Prague, I never expected to see so much wildlife especially in a city, me being a country bumpkin I wondered how I would get my fix?

So off I trotted to the zoo deciding to take a leisurely boat there and soak up the scenery along the way with a cheeky coffee. Once there I was not disappointed a fine range of creatures great and small. Particular note must go to the Bats flying above your head and occasionally brushing your hair in the nocturnal section which seemed to be greeted with elation and horror for the many visitors. You can also get quite literally face to face with almighty tigers, thankfully with a thick piece of glass/perspex between.

That was all very impressive but little did I realise that with the seasons changing the various city wildlife would begin to make themselves known to me. In the spring the toads and frogs started to appear and start their seemingly endless journey up and down the steps in the park nearby. A fleeting glimpse of a fox was seen one evening.

The abundance of bird species. Jays, Magpies and Woodpeckers. The latter of which I have been able to watch so very closely. They hang on to the tree trunks and hammer away with the occasional chuckle (I’d never realised the sounded pretty much like the cartoon woody woodpecker) I’ve now seen both lesser spotted and green woodpeckers. The adolescents love nothing more than a speed test circuit flying low from tree to park getting as close to the fence and wall in between. Most fascinating to watch.

My latest treat was two red squirrels foraging in the walnut tree opposite our second floor window. I sat for hours amazed at the dexterity of these little ginger creatures that scuttle from branch to branch, balancing and stretching out to check the nuts ripeness. While the Jays and bluetits swoop in to gather any dropped debris. The natural food chain in flow.

So take heed, gather ye nuts as Autumn is just round the corner and make the most of the last few glorious evenings, the dapple light, autumn breeze and warm pleasant days. I’ll continue to watch out for wildlife in the city whilst a little like Doctor Doolittle.
