Self-Employed

I arrived in Brno with the expectation to start a new Ph.D. in Biomolecular Chemistry at the National Centre of Biomolecular Research (NCBR) at University Campus Bohunice at Masaryk Univesity, Brno, Czech Republic. I had visited Brno a few months earlier for my interview and presentation at NCBR and after some discussion I was offered the position.

I had previously visited Brno when I had been traveling via the airline Lufthansa for a special package that involved flying out of the UK to Europe and back from Europe to the UK. This was in 1993 and from what I remember Brno was quite a dusty city. I can only remember visiting Ĺ pilberk Castle on the hill and the Capuchin Crypt down by the Cabbage Market.

I soon realized that the Ph.D. idea had been a bad one after many years of trying to solve the original Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of St. Andrews from 1999-2002. At the time I had been giving conversational English lessons to students and members of the public and had found it a good way to socialize with the local community and discover new secrets of the village type city.

After leaving the NCBR I initially starting working as an English teacher at a local secondary school in the Vinohrady district of Brno. This was a good chance to exercise my English teaching skills but I had never been very good teaching children as I was usually too lenient. So I then began teaching at a local language school (the Cambridge School of English) in Brno to adults, adolescence teenagers and companies such as Konica Minolta, Siemans and ČSOB. This proved quite rewarding but I soon discovered that the organizer was not true to his word, with me and with many other teachers, who also left their positions.

I came across the Gate2Biotech website which had advertised many positions in the Biotech / Biopharmaceutical / local universities and discovered some were advertised in English. The company I found was Lambda Laboratory Instruments CZ s.r.o. and after initial discussions and interviews I was hired as Product Manager.

What followed was the organizing of my entrepreneur license through the local biotech innovation centre (the South Moravian Innovation Centre (JIC)) where I was able to rent a virtual office and where they provided the service to help me register my entrepreneur license at the local state registry, my health insurance with VZP and social insurance. Later on they helped me to organize an accountant for my book keeping and submission to the tax office the following March / April of the next year. Previously I had organized to visit the Foreign Police to register my address with my residency contract of lease for my temporary residency pass in the Czech Republic which is valid until the expiry date of my current passport.
