Before entering a Prague Shakespeare Company performance at the Divadlo Kolowrat, leave all expectations of your average theater experience at the door. This isn’t the theater that emphasizes elaborate sets and grand, multi-balcony audiences; rather, this theater offers an intimate experience that literally brings the audience face-to-face with their literary heroes of choice.

The most obvious difference about the company is that it offers showings in English, a rarity in the Czech Republic and a treat for expats like me. Most of the shows are Shakespeare works, with a few additions such as the recent Into the Woods and upcoming A Christmas Carol.

But perhaps the biggest shock comes after entering the theater itself, where guests will find a single attic room lined with simple wooden chairs. The chairs are arranged in a circle around the perimeter of the room, and the rest of the room serves as the stage. When the actors take the stage, they’re close enough to touch (literally – at one point I almost tripped an actress as she skipped by).

While disconcerting at first, the arrangement soon brings the plays to life in a way that a regular theater and stage can’t hope to do. There’s something very different about being so up-close-and-personal with the performers; their facial expressions and gestures are on full display, and it’s easy to believe they’re really speaking and singing just for you.

The actors themselves are excellent. The company features recurring cast members in many of its productions, each capable of belting show tunes or delivering classic monologues. The same can be said for the set and costumes. In a space this intimate, the setting is all the more important and the company does not disappoint.

So for any expats looking for classic theater with a different spin, Prague Shakespeare Company may just have the show for you.
